Finding Support Groups For Celiac Disease
No matter what your situation it always helps to speak with others who really understand what you’re going through because they’ve been there. Celiac disease is no different.
Whether you’ve just been diagnosed with celiac disease or have had it for years, participating in a support group can help yourself and the other participants in more ways than you could imagine.
Now before you start picturing a circle of plastic chairs in a cold gym realize that these support groups can come in many forms.

It could be an in person gathering, a phone call from a support partner or an online group that you meet and chat with through the Internet. No matter the format, knowing you’re not the only one is going to make a big impact on how you feel about your disease.
Here are some ideas on where to look for support groups:
1. Through non-profit organizations. In Canada there is the Canadian Celiac Association. One of their main missions is to provide support for those with celiac disease. The CCA has local chapters where you can get out and find support. Here’s the link for more information:

2. Through health professionals. Ask your doctor or dietitian for information and ideas on where to find support. Since doctors and dietitians are a major contact point for many people they will likely have more than one suggestion for you.
3. Search online. There are online forums where you can sign up with an account and type messages to others in a similar situation to yours. One such forum is the one located at http://www.celiac.com which has over 30,000 members who are very active and posting daily.
4. Start your own group. All support groups will not be created equal. Maybe you can’t find one that fits you or you have a specific way you’d like a group to be run. Why not start your own support group. There is a website called Meetup.com where you can not only search for local groups but you can start your own. If you want to start your own group, set up an account on Meetup.com could get you started and connect you with other local people who also have celiac disease.
It’s a great idea to connect with other people who are in a similar circumstance but you may have another form of support that you haven’t considered. Your family and friends may want to help you but don’t know how. Sit down to have an open and honest conversation with anyone you feel could support you. Let them know what you need. You may just be surprised with how open they are to hearing what they can do!
